design overview
The entire watch has been designed with this whale in mind, this includes:
- the beautifully sculpted and bellied case with baleen engraving;
- hour and minutes hands mimicking the whales jawbone; BGW9 depicting the markings on the whales head and the glow reflective of the Indian and Southern oceans;
- matte dial finishes representing the skin tone, lugs emulating the shape and form of the whales flippers;
- whale tail insignia on the inner bezel and matching adjusting crown;
- lumed crown inserts representative of the eyes;
- and exaggerated circular markers depicting the blowhole. Collectively these elements combine to create a design which is cohesive and exceptionally well considered.
dial
The dial is the central focal point of the watch face. We made a concious decision to keep the raised dial numerals and numbers as minimalist as possible with emphasis placed on legibility. The circular apertures are generously sized and are lume filled with Superluminova pigment. We utilised a sandwich dial composition with raised numerals and circular markers to provide depth to the dial. Staying true to our inspiration taken from the Southern Right Whale, we kept the dial background matte to represent the skin tone of the whale.
case
The case is the most distinguishable feature of the watch, meticulously engraved with authentic whale baleen. This unique and captivating design will make a bold statement on your wrist, setting you apart from the crowd.
Careful consideration was given to the comfort and wearability of the case. The bellied sculpted case allowed us to incorporate short lugs ensuring a compact look and feel. This combination of features allows for the case to wear considerably smaller than what its dimensions show.
The considered approach in combining beadblasted and brushed finishes adds to the sophisticated look and feel of this case design.
bezel
The bi-directional inner bezel ring has been designed to be highly legible with a combination of markers (outer ring) and numerals (inner ring). The 12 o’clock position features the stylistic whale tail symbol and triangular markings. This has been carefully integrated into the bezel ring.
The outer ring is lumed with Superluminova in BGW9 pigment. BGW9 has a subtle blue glow and is renowned for holding its luminescence for a long time.
hands
Our hands are inspired by the shape and form of the skull. The result is an elegant and contemporary set of hands which are very legible.
The outer curvature of the hour and minute hands are raised to accentuate the whale jawbone and are either black or lume filled with BGW9 Superluminova pigment.
The seconds hand tip is either lume filled or black, again dependent upon the model. The ‘Antarctica’ and ‘Oceania’ models have the remainder of the seconds hand colour matched to the dial. The centre of the hand mimmics the circular dial markers to cohesively tie the dial elements together.
crowns
The crowns are the most functional aspect of the case. This sets the time and adjusts the inner bezel. To ensure a high level of functionality, careful consideration was given to the size, shape, the grip and the smooth operation of the crowns. We believe we have hit the mark with these on all these aspects.
Both crowns function with good fluidity. They screw and unscrew effortlessly and are easily screwed back to their closed location with minimal risk of cross threading.
The tail logo and brand logo are incorporated into the crowns and are lume filled. The brand lobo crown sets the time while the tail logo crown operates the inner chapter ring.
caseback
The screwdown caseback has been beautifully engraved with the Southern Right Whale. Careful consideration was given to the depth of the engraving to ensure maximum comfort on the wrist so that the engraving did not provide any irritation or discomfort.
Only the essential information is portrayed on the caseback, such as the water resistance, automatic movement and individual serial numbering.
The caseback features a slightly bellied shape with a combination of brushed and beadblasted finishes.
Overall we believe we have achieved a beautiful and sophisticated caseback.
lume
We only use the best lume pigments available, Swiss Superluminova for our dial, numerals, indices, hands and crown inserts.
BGW9 (blue glow) lume has been chosen for its bright and long lasting glow.
BGW9 lume emits a blueish glowing light and utilises natural daylight to recharge.
This illumination provides a modern look to the watch and has a crisp white look in daylight.
Only the ‘Antartica’ model will feature ‘black’ lume to the dial numbers as the numbers are black and we thought it would be novel to add this even though the glow from this pigment does not last long.
movement
Our DW-D3 models are powered by the precision made Japanese Miyota 9039. It’s a great performer and more than rivals its Swiss counterparts for accuracy and reliability.
The 9039 is part of Miyota’s Premium Automatic line. It features a decent power reserve, it’s an automatic movement built on the 9015 framework.
It’s a true no-date movement with no phantom crown position. It can be manually wound and incorporates a hacking seconds hand for synchronising between multiple time keeping devices.
